Live Action Rurouni Kenshin 2012 in English is coming">3 comments
I simply cannot believe I missed it.
I didn’t know that Japan was making a live action Rurouni Kenshin movie! The Rurouni Kenshin manga is one of my most favorite stories that influenced me when I was growing up. Even now I occasionally browse fan arts and fan fictions, but I do not pay as much attention because I thought that there wouldn’t be anymore Kenshin or Samurai X releases after the OVA, anime and movies and it has been years.Oh, and the mangaka Nobuhiro Watsuki has been working on other projects.
“I met some girls from Japan in my building and, when they came in my room, they saw the chibi Kenshin plushie I borrowed from you. They said that there was a live action Kenshin movie was coming in 2012, this year.” is what my sister wrote to me in Skype last night.
Today I find out that it had its premiere in Japan only few days ago!
I guess the good thing about it is that I didn’t get to suffer the wait like everyone else that found out last year… I do still have to wait until I can get my hands on a copy of the movie with English subtitles though.
So, if I did not find out… Bets are that some of you didn’t know either, so I made it my mission to write about it and spread the knowledge for the Rurouni Kenshin fans that moved on.
Here are the the official Rurouni Kenshin or Samurai X trailers with English subtitles.
Official Rurouni Kenshin movie trailer 1 (subtitled)
Purrrrfect! Movies are known to butcher books, and same way goes with the choices of the cast to match the characters in a book (or graphic novel). However, from the trailer above, Takeru Satoh, the actor playing Kenshin, seems feminine and the brief smile I saw… Definitely appeased my fears, he seems to fit the character of Kenshin decently! Now, the most important part… The couple scenes of the fights that I saw where Kenshin did one of his amazing moves seemed well done, I’m excited by now! Now, let’s see the second trailer.

The director Keishi Ōtomo and crowd seem to have put a lot of thought in the cosplay or costumes for the actors in the movie to match the mangas! Kenshin definitely had the telltale high ponytail and low ponytail, along with the mop of hair on his head that is somewhat reddish, yet not too brazenly. Saitō Hajime (Yosuke Eguchi) appeared very briefly but… did I spot a spike of hair in front of his face? Wow, even Yukishiro Tomoe had her eyebrows made the same way as the character in the manga.
There is one exception, however… I saw Kaoru… I can say I couldn’t really place her as the character in the manga. Maybe because the hair wasn’t really done just right… I thought she was supposed to be Tomoe at first due to her bangs. Below is a very good Kaoru cosplay that has much batter hairstyle that suits the image of Kaoru more than the actress Emi Takei:
Don’t fail me…
I think it’s rather obvious that I have high expectations from this movie… I don’t expect the movie to be great on the storyline but I expect wonderful visual adaptations of what happened in the manga. I have always wanted to see a real life Kenshin in battle; since they seem to have done a good job on picking the actor and the battles seem to be good, I think the movie will please me. Seeing Hiko in the movie hitting his baka deshi will be a bonus (no, I didn’t check whether he is in movie or not… I don’t want to get anymore spoilers until I watch the movie, okay?)
